Google Product Categories (Google Base)
With the recent changes to the Google Base product search causing issues with many of the google base implementations with Magento I’ve updated the Products In Google post with our newest script which should keep your google shopping results running for a little while longer.
One aspect that has not been covered however is the way we can utilise Googles product categories.
I have attached a list from the google taxonomy – it’s a complete record of the categories that Google has under it’s product listing application.
As you can see there are over 4000 of them. Now the problem is, when linking this up with our products in google post – we’re struggling to come up with a way of integrating this successfully. What we want to do is match our own categories to the equivalent category on the Google taxonomy list.
One way, and I think the most fool-proof way, would be to create an extension that would allow you to add a drop-down box to the Manage Categories section. This way for each category we can select the appropriate Google category that matches. We would then be able to use this in the gbase.php loop and tick another of Googles ever increasing boxes.
I would be interested if anyone out there has a good idea of how to go about this – any extensions that you’ve seen that allow us to add attributes to categories etc.
If we find a solution we’ll keep you posted and updated the blog accordingly.
